Secondary Schools participation
In cooperation with KASOMK Maaseik (B) we give their teachers the tools to enthuse children in primary and secondary education. Previous projects in Flanders have taught us that this is not easy. Technology education requires of its pupils an affinity for technology. Some pupils in primary and secondary schools do not have that affinity. This requires a different approach of the teacher who must leave room for non-technically oriented people. Technology teachers also tend to teach knowledge and skills while the methods of the inventors and Braintrigger technique make use of so called open assignments in which the assignment determines the knowledge and skills needed. These are relatively new concepts in education. If we want teachers working as ambassadors for the project, they will have to be persuaded and then trained in a way that they allow children to seek for their own affinity for technology and science. If there is co-ownership and co-creation among teachers participating in the project, they will proudly promote it.
Together with the teachers of the Technical Institute in St. Jansberg Maaseik (Flanders), we are further developing the method of the Inventors so they themselves can assist primary schools in their neighbourhood. When they are familiar with the method they will use it in the long term and consider it to recruit prospective students.
About vzw Kaholiek Secundair Onderwijs Maaseik-Kinrooi
The Technical Institute St. Jansberg Maaseik is part of the Catholic School Maaseik - Kinrooi. It is a christian school with emphasis on technical training. With more than 1700 students, the Technical Institute St. Jansberg Maaseik (TI SJM) is currently the largest technical school in Limburg, a north region in Belgium. The Catholic School Harlindis Relindis Maaseik-Kinrooi was started in 1999 and has grown into a strong partnership with nearly 3,500 students and 600 staff.
The school has chosen its Educational Structure all disciplines grouped in areas of interest: groups of studies whose content are close to each other. Thus we distinguish four areas of interest:
• Languages and Science
• Business Administration
• Industry and Technology
• Social Science and Welfare
The school chooses its vision for innovative education. We want to educate students with the latest technology and assure a smooth transition between secondary education, and the higher education field. Therefore, the cooperation between schools, businesses and organizations for our school is very important. This is the challenge and goal of Mosa-ic: the development of an extensive collaboration of schools with business and organizations (socio-economic partners).
However the link to basic education gets much attention within the school. Here, after all, the foundation for what concerns the interests of each child, is laid. Children and parents often have a wrong and inferior image of technology. And here the project of the Inventors is powerful: children are inspired by a story and then go from their own creativity to working with technology. A story constantly challenges children to think of an invention, draw, build ... Teachers of TI SJM draw for years to nearby elementary schools to introduce technology to teachers and pupils of primary schools. This project was a great opportunity for that process.
The Technical Institute St. Jansberg has in the past built several objects that play a role in the adventures of the Inventors. These adventures are filmed and part of a big event where thousands of children, adolescents and adults experience the adventure of the inventors. The collaboration between the inventors and the SJM TI started in 2007 and has so far resulted in the following projects
2007-2008: Flemish Project Steering Committee (KHLim, RVO Society Workshop Friday, SJM): "The inventors and the Crazy Caravan ' construction of objects flying story "The inventors and the Drowned River '
2008-2009: construction of dolphins for story "The inventors and the Hidden Eye '
2009-2010: Construction of lions for narrative "The inventors and the Wheel of the Sun"
2010-2011: construction of a car for mechanical circus for narrative "The inventors and the Wheel of the Sun"
In this project we invite teachers of Sint Jansberg to be the ambassadors of the project. We are developing the method for teachers of Sint Jansberg to use the project as a tool to recruit pupils of neighbouring elementary schools. The knife cuts both ways as the elementary schools are provided by a useful new method taught by professional teachers of Sint Jansberg while the professional school at the same time recruits future students.
Secondary schools, Stedelijk College Eindhoven
In cooperation with the teachers of the Stedelijk College Eindhoven, we will create workshops in line with the new film developed especially for secondary schools. Workshops that are to be implemented in the curriculum of the Stedelijk College Eindhoven. Once proven these workshops will be made available for other secondary schools.
The Stedelijk College Eindhoven (NL) is also part of a consortium of schools in secondary education that coordinates how they can best support basic education. Thus through the collaboration with Stedelijk College Eindhoven we automatically get access to an existing and well-organised network.
